God of the Impossible: How God Rescued a Man from Drugs and Alcohol and Restored His Relationship with His Son

In Articles, Stories by Kirk Giles

Adam’s Story

I never get tired of hearing how God does great miracles in men at our events. As you read Adam’s story below please know that you are a big part of it. Your giving throughout the year is a big reason why these stories keep happening. With God no situation is hopeless or impossible.

Adam:“My parents divorced when I was around four or five years old. I was raised by my grandparents, and they were Catholic, so we went to mass and stuff. I had family members who drank a lot, and at a very young age I began drinking too. My dad came back into my life when I was around 13 years old, so I ended up moving in with him—which turned out to be a bad idea.

Getting drunk and high was something we did every day.

“My dad was using drugs and selling them too. Cocaine was his drug of choice. When I was barely a teenager, getting drunk and high was something we did every day. That was my normal.

“I eventually met a girl and we started living together—and getting high together. She became pregnant and gave birth to our son. Because of our age and messed up lifestyle, we separated. She was granted custody of our son, and I soon lost touch with him.

“I was working doing eavestroughs when I met the woman who would eventually become my wife. Our lives were a mess at the time as both of us were into drugs and booze. Not having any money, we moved into the basement of her parents’ house.

I finally saw a healthy family!

“It was there that something started to change in me. I finally saw a healthy family! They loved each other, they had dinners together, they went to church together. I saw that, and I wanted that. So I started to go to church with them. I accepted Jesus and eventually got baptized.

“It took a couple of years for me to walk it out and get clean. I went to Celebrate Recovery to deal with some of my issues. I had a lot of anger and hate in me that would come up.

“It was around that time that I came into contact with my son again. I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear what he had gone through during my absence.

“His mom had continued in the lifestyle of drugs and had connected with some of the wrong people. A man from one of her relationships would lock my son in his room for days while she went out stripping to earn money. I was devastated to hear all of this.

“My son and I started to spend a few weekends together and then an entire summer vacation. He saw the difference between the life I was leading now and the one his mother was still trapped in, and he was attracted to it. He wanted to be part of my life!

Enter Impactus | Promise Keepers Canada

“While in Celebrate Recovery, I saw a poster about a men’s event called Promise Keepers. Some of the guys invited me to join in, so I went. It was awesome. I learned so much. Two years later, I thought I would ask my son to see if he would join me because they had a youth break out session and it featured a rapper named Manafest. He was open to it and said he would come!

He stayed for an extra 45 minutes asking questions and talking to Manafest about Jesus!

“I was so happy that he agreed to come. He went to the youth breakout session with Manafest and I waited for him to come out, but I didn’t see him. After another half hour I asked someone where my son might be. Turns out he stayed for an extra 45 minutes asking questions and talking to Manafest about Jesus! He then wanted to go the prayer room.

“My son has changed dramatically since then and has accepted Jesus into his heart. He is still a work in progress, but aren’t we all? I thank the Lord that he is back in my life.

“I have now been to four Impactus | Promise Keepers Canada events, and I love the ministry’s focus on guys and reaching out to youth. I was even encouraged to start to my own business; it’s going great, and I’ve been able to help others through it. Our God is the God of the impossible!

“As my praying grandmother once said, ‘When you accept Him (Jesus) into your life, everything changes!'”

I love Adam’s story because it shows that “impossible” situations are not impossible with God. When men surrender to Jesus, everything begins to change.
