Theme of the Week: The God Who Still Speaks
Bible Verse: “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.” Hebrews 1:1–2
Scripture Reading: Hebrews 1:1-4
The book of Hebrews begins with how God spoke in times past:
- long ago
- to our fathers
- by the prophets
- in various ways
The writer compares this to God’s newer communication through Jesus:
- in these last days
- to us
- by his Son
Jesus is God’s ultimate revelation to his people. God has taken the initiative to reveal himself clearly to us not only through the words but through a person.
God’s ultimate revelation is not in sentences. God’s ultimate revelation is Jesus. He is God’s final, ultimate Word.
Do you want to hear God speak? Read the Bible. God spoke through the prophets who wrote the words of Scripture. We need every word of the Bible.
But God didn’t just reveal himself through other people. He came, in person, to communicate directly to his people. “In Christ, he spoke fully, decisively, finally and perfectly”1 (Raymond Brown).
