Flourishing in Uncertainty

In Daily Devotional by Dean Brenton

Theme of the Week: The Key to Flourishing

Bible Verse: “So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian.” Daniel 6:28

Scripture Reading: Daniel 6:1-28

We’ve reached day five of our devotionals, and you may have picked up a common theme in the lives of the four Hebrew men: they needed life insurance! These young men risked life and limb, facing constant peril and threat, but yet were able to flourish as men, as leaders, and faithful followers of God.

This last story may be the most familiar of all. It’s an account of a guy who joined a lion’s club and lived to tell about it; we know it as “Daniel in the Lion’s Den.”

Daniel had ascended to a high place of influence in the nation, and while providing exceptional leadership, he had not compromised his faith. He became an easy target for his enemies, however, who set a trap for him by convincing the king to issue a “pray to me only” decree or suffer severe punishment. But this order did not interrupt Daniel’s daily prayer practice and his strong commitment to Yahweh. The death sentence was swift. He was thrown into a lion’s den, but God miraculously delivered him. Daniel was exalted again, and the king acknowledged the true God.

In the face of uncertainty, Daniel flourished because he trusted in God above his circumstances. His daily walk with God was unchanged; his confidence in God for his future was undeterred.

There may not be a better word to describe our world and the happenings of the past months than “uncertainty.” Maybe this term describes your employment, health, family, marriage or future, but in these uncertain days, you can trust God completely. But don’t miss this: our growth in trust and confidence is directly related to growth in our daily walk with God as we learn to abide in his Word and pray.

In the next chapter, Daniel was given a glimpse of the future: “As my vision continued that night, I saw someone like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven…His kingdom will never be destroyed.” (Daniel 7:13-14)

We can flourish in the uncertainty of our present because of the One who has covered our past, cares for our present, and controls our future!
