Theme of the Week: How to Make the Most of Your Sabbath Rest
Bible Verse: “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.” Psalm 23:1-3 NIV
Scripture Reading: Psalm 23:1-6
Most societies today still consider men as the main providers. In many instances, it is expected of men to take care of their families and to work hard, doing everything in their power to ensure that those who depend on them lack nothing. Christians also value this role, and with good reason, since man has this as a God-given responsibility on earth.
But sometimes, in the turmoil of our busy lives, we seem to forget that the first provider is God, and that without him, even our greatest efforts are insufficient when it comes to ensuring the abundance, peace and security our homes or communities long for. After all that we do for the good of our people, we absolutely need rest. But not just any rest: men need to rest in God, our good Shepherd!
The opening verses of Psalm 23 tell us about rest in a way that reminds us that the best rest is that which is founded on the Shepherd of our souls:
- When we understand that God cares more about us than we care about ourselves
- When we consider that he moved heaven and earth to ensure our future
- When we believe that he has already done everything necessary for us to lack nothing and that he even has planned times for us to rest – not only for our tired bodies, but also for our minds and souls –
…then we begin to let go of our stress and anxiety to fully appreciate the things in our life that correspond to the green pastures and the still waters he wants to lead us to.
Of all the resting options that you have, which ones most closely “resemble” a place of refreshing for your soul?
