Determining Godly Wisdom

In Daily Devotional by Paul Fraser

Bible Verse: My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion. Proverbs 3:21

Scripture Reading: Proverbs 3:21-26; Ephesians 5:15-16

Ok, it’s time for a quick check-in.

How’s it been going? If you have yet to read the last few days of devotionals, you can take some time to review them now. For the rest who’ve been following, let’s pause for a quick assessment to determine if we are still on the pathway to wisdom and understanding.

Today’s verse says, “Do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight.” You started the week well, with wisdom front and center, by asking yourself the question that kicked off this week’s devotional series:

What’s the wise thing to do?

Have you continued to do that? Have you lost sight of wisdom four days in? This is not a judgment but rather an encouragement to re-engage today.

It’s easy to lose our new learning when we return to our old habits and behaviours. Our busyness sometimes becomes the focus, and as Charles E. Hummel writes in his book Tyranny of the Urgent, “Your greatest danger is letting the urgent things crowd out the important.”

And what’s more important than wisdom? When God asked Solomon what he wanted, he didn’t choose riches, power, or prestige. Solomon chose wisdom. Why do we let other things crowd out the essential things?

Trying to live with godly wisdom takes discipline and focus every day. I’m hoping to help you pause right now to think and ask, “Am I prioritizing the pursuit of godly wisdom in my life today? Am I determined to stay at it and live with wisdom?”

Prayer: Dear God, so many things come at me daily, and I get distracted easily. Help me today to keep focused on You and Your teachings. Even in the busyness, keep me in peace and guide me with Your wisdom.

Reflection: What can I do to remind myself daily to prioritize seeking wisdom? What are some urgent things that are crowding out the important?
