Bible Verse: “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” (John 6:27)
Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:19-21
Work. It can be a blessing and feel like a curse all at the same time.
Jesus had some interesting things to say about work:
“Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.” (John 6:27, NIV)
Did you notice it?
He tells us what to work for. He doesn’t tell us not to work at all.
We need to work to pay the bills. That’s a reality of being in the world. Jesus Himself worked as a carpenter.
But since we are not supposed to be “of” this world, there’s got to be more than that.
In Matthew 6:19-20, Jesus gives more instructions on work:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (NIV)
In reading this, I don’t think Jesus is saying that we shouldn’t have any physical things. We need a place to live, transportation, clothing, etc.
And I don’t think He is saying we can’t have anything beyond our basic needs. He wants us to enjoy this life, too.
It’s when this world takes the primary place in our souls over His world that He warns us about. In other words, work is an important thing, but it can also distract us from the most important thing.
As Christian men, we are supposed to keep our eyes, hearts, and souls focused on His heart and His purposes. He has us in our jobs for a reason. It may be to simply provide for our needs, and that’s a good thing, but it just might be for more than that.
Jesus continued with the reason for His instructions:
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21, NIV)
He cares for our needs, but more importantly, He cares for our hearts, and He might just be using your work to refocus yours.
So, the next time you are at the “punch clock,” remember that to be “in” the world is to pay the bills and collect earthly treasure. To not be “of” the world is to hold that treasure with an open hand, knowing that it can be destroyed, and instead work for His treasure that won’t ever spoil.
Prayer: Jesus, I confess that I hold on to this world too often and am unwilling to let it go. Forgive me and help me see where You want me to build Your kingdom, not my own. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
