“I AM the Light of the World.”

In Daily Devotional by Tim Bergmann

Bible Passage: “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”  (John 8:12)

Scripture Reading: John 9:1-41

I got to visit Cairo, Egypt in 2010.

During that time, we took a trip to see Mt. Sinai on the Sinai Peninsula.

Half the entertainment was the night drive there and back. One of the things I found most amusing (and terrifying) was the driver telling us that, in order to save battery life on his van, he would drive with the headlights off as much as possible. If ever he thought another vehicle was coming towards us, he would turn his lights on again.

That was an exhilarating drive, to say the least.

Being able to see is an incredible gift (especially if you’ve been driving in the dark).

In John chapter 9, Jesus healed a man who had been blind since birth. It was an unheard-of miracle at the time. After a lifetime of darkness, he could finally see light!

The man was overwhelmed by the amazing gift he had received. He ended up being under fire from the religious leaders for a while over the miracle, but that wasn’t enough to stifle his joy.

All of us are born spiritually blind. We are unable to see the wonderful works of God until our eyes are miraculously opened by Christ (2 Corinthians 3:12-18).

This is both a crisis and a process.

We see for the first time and grasp the truth that Jesus died for us and that we can have eternal life through Him. His Word, which once was confusing, suddenly makes sense.

But it is also a process. The Light of the World is bringing more light into our world. We see more clearly as we grow in Christ. We can identify sins in our lives better. We can see His instructions more plainly. We can discern supernatural paths that we wouldn’t have seen before (Isaiah 30:21). His Word is a light for our feet (Psalm 119:105).

Jesus is the Light that will illuminate any dark place. Are you a man who sees with the light of Christ?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, there are times when I am blinded by the success of the world or by the distractions all around me. There are still areas of my life and character that I don’t see clearly enough yet. Thank You for opening my eyes to see the wonderful things in Your Word and in Your character. Continue to clarify my way before me, and help me to fix my eyes on You! Amen.

Reflection: What are you fixing your eyes on these days? Are you a man focusing on Jesus as the Light of the World, or are there other things distracting you?
