In a World Full of Gambling

In Addiction, Articles, Life Issues, Money by Colin Kirby

Gentlemen, start your engines…

As I write this, the Toronto Indy has just happened.

Did you bet on who would win?

Did you bet on who would start on the pole?

Did you know you could have even bet on things as the race was in progress?

Also, as this is being written, we are in the midst of the 2024 Summer Olympics, and even they are not exempt from the temptation of placing a bet on who will win gold.

Gambling has become an increasingly prominent part of modern culture, especially with its pervasive presence in sports advertising. For many men, this can be a tempting and often confusing issue. From a biblical perspective, understanding what the Bible says about gambling can provide valuable guidance as we seek to be men who steward God’s resources well.

What the Bible Says About Gambling

The Bible does not explicitly mention gambling as we understand it today, but it does provide principles that can be applied to this issue. Here are some key biblical perspectives:

  1. Stewardship of Resources
    • Luke 16:11: “So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?” This verse highlights the importance of being responsible with our finances. Gambling often involves risking money that could otherwise be used to support our families or contribute to those in need.
  2. The Love of Money
    • 1 Timothy 6:10: “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.” While not directly addressing gambling, this verse warns against an excessive focus on wealth, which gambling encourages. The desire for quick money can lead to harmful behaviors and financial instability.
  3. Contentment
    • Hebrews 13:5: “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have.” Gambling is typically driven by a discontent with one’s financial situation and a desire for something more. The Bible encourages contentment and trust in God’s provision.
  4. Integrity and Honesty
    • Proverbs 13:11: “Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.” Gambling can sometimes be associated with dishonesty or deceit, particularly in cases where individuals hide their gambling habits from loved ones.
  5. Avoiding the Appearance of Evil
    • 1 Thessalonians 5:22: “Reject every kind of evil.” Gambling, due to its potential to lead to addiction and financial harm, can be seen as a practice that carries negative consequences. Avoiding it can help maintain a lifestyle that aligns with biblical teachings.

Sports betting and gambling advertisements are everywhere and can create significant pressure to participate. The Bible calls us to be cautious about influences that may lead us away from a godly path (e.g., 1 Corinthians 15:33). It encourages us to make choices that align with our values and beliefs, including being wise about how we manage our money and avoiding practices that can lead to financial and personal harm.

Practical Considerations

  1. Financial Responsibility: Consider how gambling affects your finances and your ability to responsibly provide for your needs and those of your family.
  2. Personal Integrity: Reflect on whether gambling aligns with your Christian values and the example you wish to set for others.
  3. Support Systems: If gambling becomes a temptation or addiction, seek support from trusted friends, family, or professional counselors.

Gambling’s increasing visibility can make it challenging, but focusing on biblical principles can provide clarity and direction. By prioritizing stewardship, contentment, and integrity, men can navigate these challenges in a way that aligns with their faith and values.
