Theme of the Week: The Heart
Bible Verse: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” Ezekiel 36:26
Scripture Reading: Ezekiel 36:25-30
When a doctor gives you a diagnosis of a heart problem, he will often tell you of the potential pending consequences. He will also show you how to take care of your heart and maybe even how to heal it. But what if the heart is so broken that the only solution is a heart transplant?
Our hearts are so destroyed by sin that we need a new heart. The natural response to finding out we have messed up hearts is to figure out how to fix them ourselves. We try harder to be more spiritual, or to love others or ourselves better, or to stop giving in to the sin we always give in to. But the only solution to our deceitful hearts is God.
Notice how Ezekiel quotes God as saying he will give us a new heart. You and I need a heart transplant and only one person can give it to us. God is our only hope.
In Psalm 51:10, after King David had been found guilty of the sins of adultery and murder, his request of God is fascinating. He does not ask God to help him stop lusting after women. David asks God to create in him a clean heart.
How would your life be different if you asked God to give you a new heart or clean your heart?
I do not like visiting the doctor. I am even less happy when the doctor tells me I cannot fix my problems on my own. Oh, that we would be men who are humble enough to trust the Great Physician to deal with our hearts.
