Battle Together

Theme of the Week: Don’t Go through Life Alone

Bible Verse: Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the Lord will work for us, for nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few.” And his armor-bearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Do as you wish. Behold, I am with you heart and soul.” 1 Samuel 14:6-7

Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 14:1-14

This has to be one of my favorite stories in the whole Bible, about Jonathan and his armor-bearer taking on an entire Philistine army. The courage and faith of both of these young men are remarkable. I love this phrase that Jonathan said, “It may be that the Lord will work for us”. He had complete confidence in God’s ability to save by “many or by few” – Even though he wasn’t sure He would, they still went. Wow!

We have been hitting home this week’s theme of not doing life alone and are concluding that we are deeply connected through Christ. So, this means when one of us is in a battle, we are all in it with them. I love how Jonathan’s armor-bearer clearly understood this. He was so connected to Jonathan, that his commitment to him was unquestioned. If Jonathan was going into a battle, he was going with him, fighting right beside him.

Something amazing happens relationally when battling for and with one another. It develops such a depth of relationship when you go through difficult times together. Unfortunately, today some spend their time battling against each other. This doesn’t work as the body of Christ. How does an arm fight against a leg? Aren’t we all on the same team? We battle for each other because when others win, we win. If you win and others lose, you both lose, because we are so closely connected.

Here are few questions to consider as we close our devotional today. I hope they will not only get you thinking, but also lead to some action: Do we know what battles our friends are fighting? Are we close enough to them? What battles are you fighting? Who do you need by your side?
