Theme of the Week: Success As A Christian Man
Bible Verse: “An overseer, therefore, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife … He must manage his own household competently and have his children under control with all dignity. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of God’s church?)” 1 Timothy 3:2, 4-5
Scripture Reading: 1 Timothy 3:1-7
A man I know had built a successful career and reputation, but he’d drifted away from his wife, and his kids didn’t want to talk to him. Eventually he realized that all his outward success couldn’t compensate for his failures as a husband and father.
For Paul, one of the proving grounds of our character is our family life. While some debate what “husband of one wife” means, at the very least, it seems to refer to being a faithful man who takes his marriage vows seriously. Including, and perhaps especially, in the area of sexual purity. If you’re married, it means that you love your wife well, avoid inappropriate behavior with others, and keep your sexual behavior, body and eyes, to her.
Paul also mentions effectively managing our children to maturity. Obviously, that doesn’t mean our children must be perfect. It means that we take our fatherhood responsibilities seriously, and that we know how to supply the individual care each child needs to develop character and maturity.
Family is one of the most challenging areas of life. It’s often easier to succeed in business than with our wives and children. But success in God’s eyes means keeping our marriage vows, loving our wives, and raising our children well.
If you have a family, ask for God’s help in being faithful as a husband and father. If you hope to marry someday, aim to grow as a man of God. And pray for other husbands and fathers too.
Prayer: Lord, often I try to do the best on my own. I need your help to be a faithful husband and father. That all starts with being a man who faithfully follows you. Help me to be faithful in following you so that every area of my life reflects that faithfulness.
Reflection: Is there an area of life where your faithfulness is failing? What is causing it to fail? Ask for God’s help in seeing those things that pull you away.
