Bible Verse: “And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” (Romans 8:17 ESV)
Scripture Reading: Galatians 4:4-7
If you’re in the middle of the 9-5 grind, building your career like many men, it’s tempting to daydream about retirement.
The “Hakuna Matata” life endorsed by Timon and Pumba in The Lion King (minus the grubs) seems like the better choice.
Simba, the titular Lion King, initially adopts the carefree lifestyle, especially in light of the tragic events orchestrated by his uncle Scar. He runs away from his responsibilities as the heir to the Pridelands and forgets his true identity and destiny.
Despite this seemingly carefree lifestyle, Simba cannot escape his true calling and inheritance. The wise Rafiki reminds him that his father “lives in you,” referring to his father’s enduring presence and the responsibilities Simba must embrace. Simba understands that his true inheritance is not merely the physical kingdom of the Pridelands but the values, wisdom, and leadership qualities his father imparted to him.
Simba’s journey back to the Pridelands symbolizes the shift from living for the present moment to embracing his eternal inheritance and responsibilities. By confronting his usurper uncle and taking on that emotional burden and physical fight, he becomes who he was meant to be. He reclaims his rightful place as king and restores balance and peace to his kingdom.
As sons of God, we, too, become heirs of God’s kingdom. By picking up our cross and following Christ as sons of the true King, we are called to a spiritual inheritance and responsibility over temporary worldly pursuits. Simba’s journey from escapism to embracing his destiny serves as a powerful reminder to steward our gifts and resources for a greater purpose, investing in our eternal inheritance.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for our inheritance in You. Help us to live as faithful stewards of Your kingdom, using our time, talents, and treasures to advance Your purposes on earth. Amen.
Reflection: How does the reality of being heirs of God’s kingdom influence your daily decisions and priorities?
