Theme of the Week: Is the Christian Religion Hypocritical or Real?
Bible Verse: “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?” Deuteronomy 10:12-13 NIV
Scripture Reading: Deuteronomy 10:12-20
Religious routine is not the issue; it is the heart behind it. Have you ever noticed that if we focus our energy on the discipline of rules and regulations, things tend to not work, and relationships are more difficult?
Jesus’s message in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5 to 7 is very disruptive. Jesus raised the bar on what religion was. It was not about routines or rules but the rending of our hearts before God – an exposure of what is on the inside. There is a difference between knowing God and knowing about God. Loving God makes me want to change; relationship makes me want to change, not rules or religious practices.
This week we will explore what is behind the practices and routines. Join us as we will see how at the beginning of Matthew 6, Jesus is not talking about changing our actions but addressing the heart behind them. We will see the importance of our inward life and motivations and how that impacts how we give, pray and fast.
