Light on a Dark Night

Theme of the Week: What is Salt & Light of the World? The Christian Influence

Bible Verse: “You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 CSB

Scripture Reading: Proverbs 4:18-19, John 8:12

Once, when I went camping, I got up in the middle of the night to go to the rest station. I forgot my flashlight but thought that I could find my way without it. I soon discovered that this was impossible. I’m so used to light from living in a city that I couldn’t believe how dark the night could be.

Jesus said, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14), and he commanded us to let our lights shine. Jesus spoke these words at a time of olive-oil lamps, not a time of streetlights and billboards. It could get dark! And he said that in the darkness, Christians could shine and illuminate the world. G. Campbell Morgan says, “He saw them wrapped in gloom, sitting in darkness, groping amidst fogs and mists, and He knew that they needed, above everything else, light.” And Jesus called Christians to be that light.

The darker the world gets, the more Christians have the opportunity to shine in the darkness.

Allow God’s light to shine in your life. Don’t hide it. Don’t be ashamed of God and his work in your life.
