Theme of the Week: A Life of Purpose
Bible Verse: “For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue.” 2 Peter 1:5 ESV
Scripture Reading: 2 Peter 1:5
What are the things you put all kinds of effort into? What drives your thinking and decisions each day?
When Peter sees everything God has already given to you, he sees an opportunity for your life to become something that is truly great in the eyes of God. Because God has already given you everything you need, the call of Peter is for you to make every effort into becoming this kind of man.
This is not a passing by kind of lifestyle. You must be all in and consumed with the effort it is going to take to become the man God designed you to be. Building your spiritual muscles will take work.
The first muscle Peter gives is virtue. Virtue simply means goodness. In other words, work hard to be a good person. The word used for goodness in this verse is not about the things you do; it is first about who you are.
Anyone can have moments of expressing goodness, but it takes work to be a good person all the time.
The best way to build this spiritual muscle is to consistently worship God. He is good. All of his actions of goodness are natural because they are flowing from who he already is. Then, pick one area of your life where being good doesn’t come easy for you – and ask this good God what it looks like to reflect him in this area of your life. In those moments when you don’t think you can be good, remember that he’s already given you everything you need for life and godliness.
Pay attention today to the circumstances that will try to take you away from being good, and choose instead to press in to build your spiritual muscle of goodness.
