The Forest Through the Trees

Theme of the Week: The God Who Is There

Bible Verse: “Am I a God who is only near – this is the Lord’s declaration – and not a God who is far away?” Jeremiah 23:23

Scripture Reading: Jeremiah 23:23-24

Several years ago, I was on a hike with my family through a forest area. We followed the trail signs, and we still got lost. Just when I thought we were coming back to the entrance, I realized that we were completely on the opposite end of the forest and not even close to where our car was parked. I wish I would have had an overhead view of exactly where I was and what path I should take.

This can sometimes be a picture of life. We get so overwhelmed or focused in the moment that we lose sight of the big picture. As the saying goes, “We can’t see the forest through the trees.”

But God is not like that. Yes, God is near – he is God with us. But he is not only the God who is near, he also says he is far away. His presence fills the heavens and the earth. God is everywhere – always. This is called his omnipresence.

When we sin, we may try to run and hide from God. But because he is everywhere, he is also wherever you are trying to hide. He is there to extend grace and mercy to you. When we are overwhelmed by the circumstances of life, he is present with you to comfort you, but he also is present in the bigger story of what is unfolding. Because he is everywhere, you can trust him to lead you down the right path. He never loses sight of the forest through the trees.
