The Gift That Became a Battleground

Theme of the Week: Real Men Love, Cherish and Value All Women

Bible Verse: “I will intensify your labor pains; you will bear children with painful effort. Your desire will be for your husband, yet he will rule over you.” Genesis 3:16

Scripture Reading: Genesis 3:1-19

The first words spoken by a human in the Bible were words of joy (Genesis 2:22-23). For the first time, Adam laid eyes on Eve, and he liked what he saw. No wonder: God’s invention of gender and sexuality is an amazing thing.

Soon, though, Adam and Eve sinned. Their sin brought devastation into the world. One of the consequences of sin is that God’s good gift of gender became a battleground between men and women. In Genesis 3:16, God explains that sin damaged the relationship between the genders. Men and women struggle. We see this battle — one of control and domination — playing out throughout history and in our lives.

Gender is a gift. God invented men and women. Our genders should be something that bring us joy, that make us praise God for being so creative and generous.

But our genders have become a battleground. Sin tends to destroy everything that it touches, and it’s broken the relationship between men and women.

Our job is to rediscover the gift of God’s design, and to allow his grace to shape us so that we treat women as God intended, not the way that Genesis 3:16 describes.
