Theme of the Week: The Heart
Bible Verse: “Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life.” Proverbs 4:23
Scripture Reading: Proverbs 4:10-27
If you are a dad, you have probably had a conversation with your kids that started with the words, “Listen to me.” In Proverbs 4:10, this is exactly what is being said to us. The writer says, “Listen, my son. Accept my word, and you will live many years.” Further down in Proverbs 4, he tells us that above everything else he is saying – we need to guard our heart because it is the source of life.
The very idea of guarding means there is something sinister that you are trying to keep out. God gives you a new heart, but he wants you to keep guarding or protecting your heart from sinful influences creeping back in.
So how do we guard our hearts?
If we look back at Proverbs 4:20, we might get an idea. The father teaches the son to pay attention to his words and keep them within his heart. Then he says that his words are “life to those who find them, and health to one’s whole body.”
To guard your heart is to filter everything through the words of your Father. When we have thoughts of who we are, who does he say we are? When we have goals for life, how do those goals line up with his words? Do the desires we have for life and love align with what God says? It is in his words where we will find life.
The words of God to us – as found in the Scriptures – will help us filter out the things in our heart that are from God and those things that are not. This is when we need to keep asking God to give us a clean heart.
