The Way of Reliance

In Daily Devotional by Tim Bergmann

Theme of the Week: Wandering In The Wilderness

Bible Verse: Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. Luke 4:1-2

Has Siri ever led you astray?

I have become so dependent on my navigational system at times that I will drive wherever it tells me, even if it is obvious that it is leading me nowhere. Most of the time it is right, but a few times it has been astoundingly wrong. I find myself leaning forward in my seat, looking around, and whispering to myself, “Where the heck am I?”

I can imagine that if I were in Jesus’ shoes when the Spirit led Him out into the wilderness, I would have been asking that same question.

Jesus had just had an incredible baptism experience. John the Baptist had acknowledged Him as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. What a wonderful way to begin a ministry! Instead, He is led out into the middle of nowhere, with no food, no companionship, no audience, and no shelter. And He was out there for almost six weeks.

Sometimes, in our lives, we can feel that God has made a big mistake. He has led us somewhere that we don’t want to be. Maybe it’s a difficult financial season. Maybe there’s a relationship that is extra demanding. Maybe our health is failing.

I lost my job and was out of work for about five years because of a combination of kidney failure and mental health struggles. I remember questioning why God would allow that to happen to me. That never helped the situation at all.

It was as I surrendered to and relied on Jesus that I began to move through that season with more peace and joy.

What meant the most to me was that I had a Savior who understood me. He had been in the wilderness. He made it through, and He will help you make it through, too.
