Theme of the Week: Faith and Work
Bible Verse: “The ground is cursed because of you. You will eat from it by means of painful labor all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.” Genesis 3:17-18
Scripture Reading: Genesis 3:17-19
My computer gave me a hard time yesterday. It’s new and I like it, but it’s not perfect. I’m getting used to it. Nothing seems to work perfectly. Everything seems to have some frustration built into it.
Genesis 3 explains why. After sin entered the world, our work became cursed. Sometimes work goes really well: we get done sooner than we think and under budget, and we’re really happy with the results. Most of the time, we run into complications, things take longer than we’d hoped, and the results disappoint. It’s like going to a fast-food restaurant: the burger they give us never looks as good as the hamburger in the pictures.
God created us to work, but because of sin, our work can often seem like a struggle just to survive. God still calls us to work, but we can all expect some level of frustration in what we do. The writer of Ecclesiastes expressed it well: “For what does a person get with all his work and all his efforts that he labors at under the sun?” (Ecclesiastes 2:22). Maybe you can relate!
The good news is that God still works through our work, even when it’s hard. Don’t be surprised when work is hard, but don’t be discouraged either. God still uses our work for his glory.
